Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Guest List comes a new locked room mystery, set in a Paris apartment building in which every resident has something to hide…

Jess needs a fresh start。 She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances。 Her half-brother Ben didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris。 Only when she shows up – to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? – he’s not there。

The longer Ben stays missing, the more Jess starts to dig into her brother’s situation, and the more questions she has。 Ben’s neighbors are an eclectic bunch, and not particularly friendly。 Jess may have come to Paris to escape her past, but it’s starting to look like it’s Ben’s future that’s in question。

The socialite – The nice guy – The alcoholic – The girl on the verge – The concierge

Everyone’s a neighbor。 Everyone’s a suspect。 And everyone knows something they’re not telling。

I really enjoyed this fast paced thriller read! The book has a “And then there were none” vibe as it follows the disappearance of the protagonists brother in an apartment complex where everyone is a little too friendly。 I really enjoyed trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together。 It was a fast paced, engaging read that I would gladly recommend to readers who enjoyed the authors other pieces of work。 *received a gifted copy from goodreads for my honest review*

My favorite genre set in my favorite city? Yes please! I couldn’t put this one down。 The chapters are short, there are multiple POVs, and for who did it - I could suspect all of the residents of 12 Rue des Amants。 The twist had me audibly say “oh my god”。 I definitely liked this one more than the Guest List but I haven’t read any of her other books yet to compare further。 She included bits of phrases/dialogue in French which I loved。 I rarely speak or read French anymore so that was fun and I wi My favorite genre set in my favorite city? I received an ARC of this book。I really enjoyed The Guest List and have been very excited to read this book。 But I am struggling with even forcing myself to finish it。 It is the story of Jess, who has abruptly decided to go visit her half-brother, Ben, in Paris。 When she arrives at his apartment, he has vanished into thin air, and none of the other residents of the building seem to know anything about what might have happened to him。 Not to mention the fact that they are all a bit off-putting at I received an ARC of this book。I really enjoyed The Guest List and have been very excited to read this book。 But I am struggling with even forcing myself to finish it。 It is the story of Jess, who has abruptly decided to go visit her half-brother, Ben, in Paris。 When she arrives at his apartment, he has vanished into thin air, and none of the other residents of the building seem to know anything about what might have happened to him。 Not to mention the fact that they are all a bit off-putting at best and downright unwelcoming at worst。 Jess doesn't know who can help her or who she can trust and is convinced something terrible has happened to Ben。The characters in this book are all unlikeable, flat, and unsympathetic。 Jess is the best of the bunch, but she comes across as naive, terribly impulsive, and not that bright--how else can you explain continuously sneaking around other people's apartments, extensively going through their things, and not seeming to realize that she can get caught at any moment? The rest of the residents feel like cartoons or caricatures: the lonely aging wife who traded her youth and beauty for money, the isolated young daughter who yearns to break free of her introverted exterior and live out her fantasies, the repressed son who could never please his demanding father。。。 I just found it boring and trite。 The pacing also was too slow。 "Where is Ben?" is really the biggest question or mystery, and there seems to be no real sense of urgency about finding the answer to that question。 The biggest feelings of tension come when Jess is snooping through other people's apartments because she always takes forever to do it when someone could walk in on her--that's not tension, that's frustration at Jess being dumb。 And the setting is odd。 For making such a big deal about this being in Paris, it doesn't really feel like Paris plays that big of a role in the story。 Although Jess feels isolated and alone, the setting could be anywhere in the world。 It is the apartment BUILDING that is the big factor in the book。At about half-way through I just really got fed up with the characters, and then they began to commit some really despicable actions with no real explanations。 Instead of being intrigued I was repelled。 I began skimming, trying to find some action and something interesting。 I am now about 3/4 through and am really trying to decide if I want to finish it or not, because I really don't care what happened to Ben, what will happen to the rest of the inhabitants of the building, and although I do care a bit about Jess, she also makes terrible decisions, so she might deserve whatever happens to her。 I suppose if I do end up finishing the book I will update this, but at this point, I would not recommend this book at all。 The Guest List was great。 This one is not。 。。。more

I loved this book! This is my favourite book by Lucy Foley so far。 So very cleaver, a little bit sexy and definitely edgy。 I love reading a book when all the characters are flawed, and not that likeable in themselves but you can’t help liking them anyway! It does in my head and I loved it。 It makes me want to seek a place out just to set up camp and read all day long while sipping some coffee。 I had initially disliked our MC Jess, who seemed like that stupid girl in every thriller who you're yelling at to 'DON'T GO IN THAT EMPTY BARN, YOU'RE GOING TO DIE' because like。。。she did everything that makes you face-palm。 Granted it was in an attempt to figure out what happened to her brother, but still- STOP MAKING STUPID CHOICES, BABE! I'm a sucker for fast-paced chapters with alternating viewpoints and this did not disappoint-I loved that we had glimpses of each character and their motivations (even though you NEVER really know who someone is)。 The characters were well written and executed beautifully, you could feel the tension between them and they felt rich and authentic which was refreshing。 The writing was fluid and enhanced every single breathless, panicky, 'what's-going-to-happen-next?' moment。 I have to say even though I anticipated some of the ending details, it was superb。 Nothing was left loose, I felt things tied up exactly how they should and I wasn't left wanting for more。The plot was intriguing and believable which makes reading this so much more enjoyable。 You're not suspending belief for much, if any of this 300-ish page thriller so get ready for an action-packed, nail-biter! The descriptions were just right - not too short, not too boring and easily imaginable。 I was scared。 If I ever visit Paris in the future and I see a vintage apartment, I'm sure as hell gonna stay away from it。➋ The *very odd characters* - everyone is creepy here。A strange set of people, PERFECT in a thriller。I'm trying to avoid spoilers, but something one of those characters did towards the end of the book made me want to throw up。 Because wha-➌ The *pace* was perfect。 It didn't feel draggy or lagging at any point。 The plot kept moving and kept me glued until I read the last line。➍ The *Red Herrings* were extremely well-done。 The attention to details were genius level。 I was sure I predicted stuff but no I was wrong。➎ *Twists* that literally made me say WTF。I usually don't enjoy books with multiple POVs。 But this one was excellent。How many times did I wonder how the author could have written all those POVs without giving away too much but also keeping them equally suspicious - infinite times。"I haven't actually lied。 I just haven't said the whole truth to her" If you love these tropes:- Unreliable narrator- *Everyone* is a suspect- Locked room mystery- Big reveal in the endIf you enjoy these authors' works:- Agatha Christie- Ruth Ware- Shari Lapenathen, The Paris Apartment should be in your list。I highly recommend it。 。。。more

I won’t lie, I went into this one with low expectations because of how much I didn’t like The Guest List。 But I was very pleasantly surprised! It was fast paced, I liked all the characters (which was one of my main problems with TGL) and felt they all had a purpose, and there was twist after twist which had me guessing until the very end。The story is told in multiple POVs, but it didn’t feel like too much and it helped move the story along to hear from each person telling the story。 I hate to keep comparing it to TGL, but it’s hard not to when it was one of the biggest books of the last year, but that was another thing from TGL that I didn’t like, too many voices and it felt messy at times。 TPA is more honed in and everything felt purposeful。 I loved Jess and found myself rooting for her the entire way。 Although unsure of herself and a little naive at the beginning, she was smart and always followed her gut。 Ben was often described charming but also pompous and selfish, it was hard to know how to feel about it at times but I wanted him to be found because he was all Jess had left and I felt like she deserved that。 And like I said before, I didn’t hate any of the other characters!I mentioned fast paced, the entire story is told in a three day window, something I really liked。 Also loved that it was set in Paris, one of my favorite places and it really helped set the tone of the book。 Really good book if you’re a fan of thrillers and this made me want to read more from Lucy Foley! *Thank you to Harper Collins Canada & NetGalley for an advanced ARC in exchange for an honest review* 。。。more

Answer: The Paris Apartment – Lucy Foley’s brilliant new psychological thriller。 I wanted a book that would instantly distract from my current woes, have a fast-paced, linear plot I could follow with ease and a clever, addictive, storyline。 The Paris Apartment came up trumps! So, onto the story。。。 Jess needs to leave her life in Brighton ASAP, so she takes up her half-brother Ben’s offer to stay with him in his Paris apartment。Ben is a journalist, known for charming his way into – and out of – most situations。 The siblings aren’t exceptionally close but they do look out for each other。 Jess is looking forward to spending time with Ben, so is a little perplexed when he fails to materialise… She has to use her cunning to get into the apartment, then employ some detective skills to find out just where her half-brother has got to。Like her first book The Hunting Party, there was Agatha Christie inspired storytelling running through here – from the tense atmosphere, to the multiple POVs and twisting plot。We also have a cast of characters living in the apartment building – Sophie and Jacques in the penthouse, then Nick, Mimi, Camille and Antoine in the other apartments – and from their guarded, jumpy demeanours, it’s soon obvious that there’s more than meets the eye happening in this swanky building…As Jess uses her wits and determination to uncovers things, things get very tense indeed。 I won’t go into any more detail as I don’t want to reveal an inadvertent spoiler – the thrills in the plot are a big part of this reading experience。The Paris Apartment does have a slower start while it sets the scene, but it lays its sinister cards down so well, then ramps up the pace as secrets are slowly revealed。 I enjoyed the claustrophobic atmosphere and unexpected curveball towards the end – perfect escapism。 。。。more
